The DC Office of Motion Picture and Television Development is pleased to recognize Letelier Theater in Northwest Washington as the September 2012 One City Location of the Month. Nestled in the courtyard of a bustling commercial area in Georgetown, the 1,200 square foot Letelier Theater offers an easily accessible, yet intimate setting for smaller scale film and social events including film festivals, screenings and performances.

Letelier Theater boasts flexible event space, which includes an 85 person seated theater, state of the art movie and video projection, and a separate reception area and 600 square foot outdoor courtyard. Additional features include a retractable 14 ft. projection screen; professional grade 5000-lumen 35mm film, computer, and DVD projection; and surround sound system with Bose speakers.

The theater is dedicated to the vision and ideals of former Chilean ambassador, Orlando Letelier and designed to serve as “a meeting place to showcase ideas and events committed to engage moral and artistic imagination in the nation’s capital.” The Letelier Theater space was inaugurated by the property’s owner, Robert Elliott, in 2008 with the screening of Taxi To the Dark Side, the DC premiere of the film before it won the Academy Award for Best Documentary. In Mr. Elliott’s words, “the theater wants to be the venue for documentaries, ideas, live theater and other events that deal with important issues.”

Letelier Theater clients include various embassies, monthly screenings by the Alliance Francaise and Italian Meetup of DC, film festivals such as the Environmental Film Fest, nonprofits such as Institute for Policy Studies and Human Rights USA, fundraisers hosted by Washington Life Magazine, multi-faceted screening and market events created by Freshfarm Markets and free community screenings.

In 2011, the DC Film Office launched its One City Location of the Month to bring attention to the wide range of varied, cinematically compelling locations that are available to film and television productions. Former One City Location of the Month recipients include the Atlas Performing Arts Center in Northeast, Maine Avenue Fish Market in Southwest, Hill Center in Southeast, and Ben’s Chili Bowl in Northwest.
