OCTFME RECOGNIZES PETER KIMBALL AS THE FEBRUARY 2024 FILMMAKER OF THE MONTH

Washington, D.C. – The Office of Cable Television, Film, Music, and Entertainment (OCFTME) is proud to announce Peter Kimball as the February 2024 Filmmaker of the Month. Peter is an accomplished screenwriter, director, and advocate for d/Deaf representation. As the father of a deaf child, Peter has been a strong voice and advocate for inclusion and diversity in filmmaking and society at large. His 2023 film "Millstone" won the Grand Jury Prize at the Slamdance Film Festival and has gone on to play at festivals around the world. 

Director LaToya Foster commented, “His unwavering dedication to inclusion and diversity in filmmaking has made him a role model for aspiring filmmakers everywhere. We are proud to recognize him for his outstanding work and his commitment to storytelling and representation. Congratulations, Peter!”

In addition to his work in fiction, Peter has directed several documentaries, including "My Brother is Deaf," a short film documentary that premiered at Slamdance in 2022 and won "Best Short Documentary" at DC Independent Film Festival as well as the ADA Award for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Access at Thomas Edison Film Festival. The short film also qualified for shortlist consideration for an Academy Award in 2023. Peter’s films have been screened at prestigious venues in the DMV, including the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. He has also been a regular presence at film festivals worldwide, including Slamdance, Festival REGARD, Vancouver, Calgary, Cleveland, Cucalorus, and Show Me Shorts (NZ).

Kimball received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Brown University and his Master’s in Fine Arts in film from American University. He is a respected script consultant and screenplay adapter and has worked as a programmer for major film festivals. He is also a dedicated teacher, sharing his expertise with students at American University and George Mason University.

Among Peter’s other notable works in addition to "Millstone" and “My Brother is Deaf,” he has also directed "Deaf Giants," a short documentary film three trailblazing deaf athletes that played major league baseball in the early 1900’s. That film premiered at Screen It International Film Festival (Brisbane, Australia) 2023, and won the Special Jury Prize at Kenya International Sports Film Festival.

Peter Kimball’s passion for storytelling and his commitment to telling stories that celebrate and bring attention to triumphs and challenges of the d/Deaf community is inspiring and has truly made Peter a valuable, standout member of the District of Columbia, national, and international film community. OCFTME is proud to recognize him as the February 2024 Filmmaker of the Month.
