Mayor Gray visited the Fort Dupont Ice Arena on Monday evening to observe the Fort Dupont Ice Hockey Club youth hockey practice, and participate in the filming of ‘Hockey in the Hood,’ a special television program produced by NBC Sports. ‘Hockey in the Hood’ will highlight the Fort Dupont Ice Hockey Club, an important youth sports program in the District of Columbia, and be broadcast nationally on NBC during ‘Hockey Day in America,’ February 20th. Similar recent programming on NBC drew a nationwide audience of 4.5 million viewers. This television production provides an unparalleled opportunity to bring attention to local youth sports activities in the District and raise awareness about the great works being done to support youth in the Nation’s Capital.

Mayor Gray met with Fort Dupont Ice Hockey Club founder and legendary coach, Neal Henderson, as well as youth hockey participants and their parents, to discuss the importance of youth sports programs in the District. The Fort Dupont Ice Hockey Club, founded in 1976, is the only hockey program in Washington, DC for inner-city youth. The Club provides educational purpose and teaches young people discipline, establishes self-esteem, and offers an incentive to excel academically. The Fort Dupont Ice Hockey Club is one of only twenty-four programs throughout the United States and Canada selected to be a member of the National Hockey League's (NHL) Diversity Program and the oldest minority program in the United States.
