Washington, D.C. – The District of Columbia Office of Cable Television, Film, Music, and Entertainment (OCTFME) is proud to recognize Malachi E. Robinson as its April 2025 Filmmaker of the Month. A visionary artist, filmmaker, and creative leader, Robinson has been a driving force in using film and multimedia to tell untold stories and foster social impact through art.
A native of Washington, D.C., Robinson is the founder and Chief Creative Officer of point.black creative, where he has built a national reputation for blending bold storytelling with experimental visuals. His work spans award-winning short films, music videos, and documentaries that explore themes of identity, legacy, spirituality, and mental health. Through his lens, he amplifies voices too often left out of the mainstream narrative.
“Malachi Robinson is a force in D.C.’s creative economy whose work continues to push boundaries and elevate underrepresented voices,” said LaToya Foster, Director of OCTFME. “His fearless approach to storytelling and commitment to community through the arts embodies the power of creativity to inspire healing and change. We’re proud to recognize him as our Filmmaker of the Month.”
Robinson’s powerful documentary, The Poppaw Queen, premiered in May 2024 to critical acclaim. The film chronicles his personal discovery of ancestral connections to enslaved families from the White Marsh Plantation and their lasting legacy. It won Best Documentary at the 2024 Prince George’s Film Festival and continues to screen across the country.
His earlier work, including the haunting short film BLACK X, and the experimental Pipe Dream, which examines the isolation of an ‘80s pop star, have also earned recognition at regional and national festivals. Beyond the screen, Robinson founded the Creative Suitland Arts Center, a space that revitalized arts programming in Prince George’s County. He now serves as Arts Specialist for the Arts and Cultural Heritage Division in the Department of Parks and Recreation.
“Being recognized as Filmmaker of the Month is a humbling reminder of the impact storytelling can have,” Robinson shared. “It’s an honor to see my work resonate with others, and it inspires me to keep shining a light on untold stories that connect us and drive meaningful change.”
Robinson holds a bachelor’s degree in Entertainment Management from Coppin State University and credits his early inspiration to the cinematic magic of Michael Jackson’s short films. His journey reflects the evolution of an artist committed not only to craft, but to culture and community.
