Quaint Northeast community offers filmmakers residential landscape unique to the District

The DC Office of Motion Picture and Television Development is pleased to recognize the Fort Lincoln neighborhood in Northeast Washington as the November 2013 One City Location of the Month. The 360 acre community with lush foliage, landscaped lawns, and views that extend to the U.S. Capitol is one of the District’s most beloved neighborhoods. Showcasing the intersection of suburban and urban living, Fort Lincoln provides a suitable backdrop for any size production looking to capture the distinct residential living of the nation’s capital.

The Fort Lincoln community is bounded by Bladensburg Road to the northwest, Eastern Avenue to the northeast, New York Avenue NE to the south, and South Dakota Avenue NE to the southwest. It was conceived by President Lyndon Johnson in 1967 as a “new town in town.” Most of the 13 housing clusters comprised of 1,800 apartments, upscale condominiums and luxury townhomes in Fort Lincoln are linked by a circular road and combined, they provide housing and amenities for all races, age ranges and incomes.

The neighborhood also shares a community center, recreation center, indoor and outdoor pools, tennis courts, baseball fields, handball court, an elementary school, picnic groves, and a six acre park. The park, which is located high on a ridge overlooking the city, occupies one of 68 former Civil War ramparts, now known as the Fort Circle Parks, and was designed to interpret the site’s military history and its elevated position.

The community has been further enhanced by the recent opening of a regional shopping mall, The Shops at Dakota Crossing, anchored by the retail giant Costco. Additional retail stores, restaurants, and a bank are also on the horizon for the shopping center.

In 2011, the DC Film Office launched One City Location of the Month to bring attention to the wide range of varied, cinematically compelling locations that are available to film and television productions. Former One City Location of the Month recipients include the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Northwest, the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail, Barracks Row in Southeast, and the Brookland neighborhood in Northeast.
