Universal Pictures' Safe House, a new action-thriller starring Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds, filmed in the District this weekend bringing supporting actor, Brendan Gleeson to town. Gleeson, an Irish actor, is best known for his roles in Braveheart, Gangs of New York, 28 Days Later, and the Harry Potter films.

Safe House, which will be released in February 2012, is about an American traitor (Washington) who has been taken to a location off the grid in South Africa, where he is being held by an inexperienced CIA employee (Reynolds). After the safe house is attacked and the men escape, the young agent and his ruthless prisoner must survive the deadly underworld.

Most of filming in the District took place in downtown DC on Sunday using several streets near federal buildings and museums including Constitution Ave, Independence Ave, Pennsylvania Ave and 14th Street. While the majority of the filming has taken place in South Africa, the DC Film Office is pleased the production chose the nation’s capital as a filming location for the movie.
