DC Filmmaker Montré Aza Missouri Is November 2015 Filmmaker of the Month

Filmmaker and film professor honored for extraordinary contribution to the film community

Washington, DC – The District of Columbia Office of Cable Television, Film, Music and Entertainment is pleased to honor award-winning producer and director Montré Aza Missouri as the November Filmmaker of the Month.

A Washington, DC native, Montré Aza Missouri is founder and creative director of Parallel Film Collective that produces, exhibits and promotes independent film and is a founding partner of award-winning filmmaker Ava DuVernay’s distribution company ARRAY.

Having worked in England, Northern Ireland, Ghana and Nigeria, Montré is also an independent filmmaker and an Associate Professor in Film at Howard University where she teaches Scriptwriting, Film Directing, Film History and African Cinema.

Montré holds a PhD in Film Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) University of London. Her new book Black Magic Woman and Narrative Film: Race, Sex and Afro-Religiosity focuses on images of Yorùbá-Atlantic Religions, racial and cultural hybridity as represented in independent and mainstream cinemas.

Currently, Montré is in pre-production for the documentary DJ’s, Dance and Deities exploring the influences of West African and South Asian spiritualities and cultures on DJ Music and Diaspora Identities.

OCTFME launched the Filmmaker of the Month initiative to feature a District-based filmmaker who exemplifies the vast amount of talent and creativity based here in the nation’s capital. The Filmmaker of the Month initiative is part of OCTFME’s mission to elevate the national and international profile of the city’s most talented filmmakers. Previous filmmakers honored include ThinkFilm producer Jonathan Zurer; Fatback Films Founder Be Steadwell; and veteran award-winning husband and wife filmmakers Marilyn and Hal Weiner.
