Director & producer honored for extraordinary contribution to the film community

Washington, DC – The District of Columbia Office of Motion Picture and Television Development (MPTD) is pleased to honor award-winning producer and director Andy Fernandez as the September Filmmaker of the Month.

Andy Fernandez is a film director and photographer based in Washington, DC.

The son of Bolivian immigrants, Andy has a deep appreciation for the immigrant experience.  After attending an immigration rally in October 2013, he decided to develop a project on the youth involved in the immigration reform movement.

His first short film Risers follows four young undocumented immigrants, of which, two are students at the University of the District of Columbia, who pursue their American dream in the face of prejudice and discrimination. Andy’s 30 minute short film is scheduled to premiere at the Landmark E Street Cinema during the Media Rise Festival on October 1. He is currently also working on two music videos and a short film featuring LGBT youth in the District. You can view his portfolio at www.andyfernandez.me.

MPTD launched the Filmmaker of the Month initiative to feature a District-based filmmaker who exemplifies the vast amount of talent and creativity based here in the nation’s capital. The Filmmaker of the Month initiative is part of MPTD’s mission to elevate the national and international profile of the city’s most talented filmmakers.
