DC Film Office Sponsors DC FilmFest Workshop on Independent Films in Local and International Markets

In partnership with FilmFest DC, the DC Film Office is sponsoring a workshop on Saturday, April 9 at 10:30 AM at Busboys & Poets, 5th and K Streets, NW.

A panel of independent international filmmakers participating in the 25th FilmFest DC will discuss their experiences and thoughts about how their films have travelled and been received in various countries and markets. The panel will answer questions such as “Is it possible or desirable to try to anticipate global film tastes and make a film with an international audience in mind?” and “Is there such a thing as an independent film with universal appeal?”

Key topics to be discussed include important considerations for sequencing releases across platforms, key festivals and markets for international launches, the role of the international sales agent, and issues of traditional and digital rights. The guests are experienced and highly accomplished, with many international awards amongst them. The festival is pleased to invite DC area based filmmakers to this unique opportunity for discussion and exchange about developments in the contemporary fast moving and rapidly changing world of international exhibition, sales and distribution.

The moderator will be Cathy Wyler, producer of “Memphis Belle” and former film festival director of programming. Panelists include Lindsey Christian (Washington, DC) “Jazz in the Diamond District”; Jean-Charles Deniau (France) “Scientology: The Truth Behind the Lie”; Aviva Kempner (Washington, DC) “Yoo-Hoo, Mrs. Goldberg”; Vibeke Lokkeberg (Norway) “Tears of Gaza”; and Eliseo Subiela (Argentina) “Hostage of Illusions”
