The DC Office of Motion Picture and Television Development is pleased to recognize the Georgia Ave Business District, in Northwest Washington as the October 2013 One City Location of the Month. The Georgia Ave Business District is a bustling corridor of independently owned boutiques, restaurants and professional service establishments that serves as a link to nearby neighborhoods.
The area’s beautifully maintained streetscape includes recently remodeled storefronts, landscaped public spaces, red brick sidewalks, signature lampposts, and unique banners that brand the District. Located on a main commuter route, Georgia Avenue is truly a “gateway” to the nation’s capital and an ideal filming location to capture the District’s landscape.
The Georgia Ave commercial district is anchored by the former Walter Reed Army Medical Center on the southern end and the District/Maryland border on the northern end, catering to the surrounding middle-income DC residential neighborhoods of Colonial Village, Shepherd Park and Takoma. With the closing of the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in September 2011, the DC government is currently in the process of integrating the campus into the surrounding neighborhoods.
While Georgia Ave is one of the most traveled and distinguishable roads in the city, the business district has been virtually untapped as it relates to film and television production. With its assortment of business storefronts that serve as the facade for a community of adjoining, brilliantly colored rowhouses, this corridor offers a perfect landscape to showcase the diversity of the nation’s capital on film.
In 2011, the DC Film Office launched One City Location of the Month to bring attention to the wide range of varied, cinematically compelling locations that are available to film and television productions. Former One City Location of the Month recipients include the Smithsonian Castle in Southwest, Union Market in Northeast, the THEARC in Southeast, and the Adams Morgan neighborhood in Northwest.
