Intimate theater in Northeast provides unique cinema experience and multi-use facility for filming

The DC Office of Motion Picture and Television Development is pleased to honor the Angelika Pop-Up at Union Market in Northeast Washington as the June 2015 Location of the Month.

The Angelika Pop-Up at Union Market is a one-of-a-kind “microcinema” experience derived from the Angelika Film Center in New York City’s Soho neighborhood, one of the most well-known and highest-grossing dedicated art houses in the United States. The Angelika Pop-Up, which opened in June of 2014, is the interim DC hub for Angelika’s signature mix of specialty film programming and unique events.

The theater, located adjacent to the recently revitalized historic Union Market, has three auditoriums and a lounge that can be used for multiple purposes. Two of the auditoriums have 56 seats, one has 49 seats, and the lounge can hold 100 standing. In addition to small scale productions, the space is ideal for intimate film screenings and events. In addition to serving as a venue for film screenings, filmmakers have used the intimate auditoriums and lounge to shoot interviews for documentaries.

This multiscreen Angelika Pop-Up combines the most cutting edge presentation technology with elements of luxury and comfort in stylish surroundings reflective of the creative spirit existing in Union Market. A new full-scale Angelika Film Center is expected in early 2016 at Union Market.

In 2011, the DC Film Office launched the Location of the Month to bring attention to the wide range of cinematically compelling locations that are available to film and television productions. Former Location of the Month recipients include the Anacostia Arts Center in Southeast, the Newseum in Northwest, the Bellevue neighborhood in Southwest, and the Arboretum in Northeast.
