April 2011 Filmmaker of the Month - Ryan Richmond

Ryan Richmond, director of the award winning film Money Matters, has been selected as the first DC Film Office Filmmaker of the Month for April.

Ryan Richmond is a Washington, DC native and a graduate of New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. As a cinematographer, he has shot more than 60 films and music videos. His cinematography has been showcased in some 50 festivals nationally and internationally, including Sundance and Cannes. He shadowed Spike Lee on 25th Hour and Mathew Libatique on Inside Man.

Richmond’s directorial debut film Money Matters, was the first Short to be nominated for the Independent Feature Project’s (IFP’s) Gordon Parks Award (2001). He developed the short film into a feature screenplay, which was selected by Tribeca Film Festival’s All Access Program and won the Audience Favorite Award at Roxbury International. The screenplay also was a finalist in the HBO competition at the African American Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival; featured at Urbanworld, Congressional Black Caucus’ Annual Legislative Conference Film Series; and was nominated for Best Director at the Pan African Film Festival. The film stars Aunjanue Ellis (Credits include movies Ray and Men of Honor), local radio personality Michel Wright (WPGC) and local radio personality Antonio “The Cuban Cigar Smoker” (WKYS) with executive producer Sam Pollard (Credits include movies Inside Man and Juice).

Recently, Ryan's cinematography aired on an HBO documentary By the People: The Election of Barack Obama. Ryan is also a nominee for Outstanding Emerging Artist at the 26th Annual Mayor's Arts Awards, which will take place at the Kennedy Center on April 20, 2011.
