Rosenwald, the documentary by local filmmaker Aviva Kempner, tells the incredible story of how businessman and philanthropist Julius Rosenwald (who made his fortune at the helm of Sears, Roebuck and Co) joined with Booker T. Washington and African-American communities in the South to build schools during the early part of the 20th century. He also spurred the establishment of 25 YMCAs in cities nationwide for African-American youth -- the first of which was the Thurgood Marshall YMCA on 12th and U Streets, NW, here in Washington.
Evening includes pre-show remarks by Aviva Kempner and Norris Dodson, who played basketball at the Thurgood Marshall YMCA as a young man and later became instrumental in helping restore the building.
