The District of Columbia Office of Cable Television, Film, Music and Entertainment is pleased to honor documentary filmmaker Dana Flor as the June 2016 Filmmaker of the Month.

Dana Flor, founder and principal at Macro Pictures, is an award-winning documentary director and producer based in Washington, DC. Flor wrote and directed the Emmy award-winning documentary Latinos in Beisbol and the Emmy-nominated documentary Cesar Chavez.

Flor, in collaboration with her filmmaking partner Toby Oppenheimer, has produced several notable documentary films focusing on subjects, issues and prominent figures associated with the Nation’s Capital. Flor co-directed and produced The Nine Lives of Marion Barry with Oppenheimer. The feature-length documentary about Washington’s famous former mayor aired on HBO and was the featured closing night screening at the 2009 AFI Silverdocs Film Festival. Flor and Oppenheimer’s most recent collaboration is Check It, a film about the challenges, struggles, and personal triumphs of  a group of Washington, DC gay and transgender youth who form the first LGBT gang in the nation in order to provide themselves community, identity, and protection from hate violence. Check It had its world premiere at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival in April, and will have its Washington, D.C. premiere at the 2016 AFI DOCS Festival on Saturday, June 25 at the Newseum. OCTFME is a proud sponsor of the gala screening.

Flor is currently developing a feature-length documentary about Randall Terry, the Quran-burning, anti-abortion, anti-gay, pro-Tea Party founder of Operation Rescue. The film will explore Terry’s complex and extraordinary family made up of staunchly feminist aunts, an adopted African-American gay activist son, and a Muslim convert daughter.

Flor has also worked on a wide range of reports and video packages for Reuters Television, CNN, National Geographic, and others, covering breaking news and producing in-depth features throughout Latin America and around the world.
